It’s easy to see why Piers Park of East Boston made The Boston Globe’s reader’s list of Best Parks in Boston. It’s the perfect place to bring a date for a picnic along the harbor, let your children slide or swing on the playground, or spend some time in silent meditation as you watch the waves beyond the pier. Whatever brings you there, be sure to carry your camera to capture the postcard worthy views of Boston.

Toward the back end stand two large playgrounds for children of all ages and a water sprinkler for sweltering summer days.

Beyond the bathrooms and water fountains you can stroll along a 600 foot walkway complete with picnic benches,

pavilions,

and picturesque views of Boston.

Watch as sailboats bob along anchored in the water

or visit the Piers Park Sailing Center for rentals and classes.

You’ll also see the ferries headed to and from the Boston Harbor Islands and if you’re lucky you might spy a “pirate” ship headed away from shore.

So, you ask, how do I get there? If you’re like me and avoid driving into or through Boston at all costs, you’ll want to take the T (that’s train for any out-of-towners). Hop on the blue line toward Wonderland and get off at the Maverick Square stop. It’s only about a ten minute walk from the station (or longer if you have an incredibly inquisitive four year old tailing you along the way.) From Maverick head left on Sumner, right on Orleans, then left on Marginal Street. If you do decide to drive you’ll find ample parking in the free lot by the park.

Pack a picnic and prepare to spend the day. It’s easy enough to fall in love with Piers Park no matter what age you are.
